What is Family Support Network?

The Family Support Network of Eastern North Carolina, Inc. (FSN-ENC) is a private nonprofit corporation designed to provide emotional support and resource information through parent-to-parent contact to parents and families of children with special developmental, physical or medical needs, or who have experienced the death of a child.

How can Family Support Network help?
  • All services are FREE
  • We can put you in touch with a volunteer parent who has a child with needs similar to those of your own child. This parent can offer a “listening ear”. this parent will be someone who has been there and really understands how you might be feeling.
  • By training Volunteer Parents who have adapted in a positive manner to their child’s illness or disability.
  • By providing free information on specific medical terms or diagnosis and helping you find appropriate resources for your child in your community.

How long has FSN-ENC been in existence and how did it get started?

FSN-ENC began in 1987 in the community after local parents and professionals heard about parent-to-parent programs in other areas. A proposal was written to the Division of Community Pediatrics at UNC for start-up funds. FSN-ENC expanded to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in 1990.

FSN-ENC was instrumental in creating, a memorial garden planted in front of the children’s hospital in memory of the children who have passed away. A religious ceremony for parents having lost a child/children to death is observed the 4th Sunday in April of each year in which FSN-ENC participates.
